Actor Wentworth Miller Reveals Autism Diagnosis in Touching Instagram Post
Actor Wentworth Miller, age 49, revealed his autism diagnosis in a touching Instagram post. “This fall marks 1 year since I received my informal autism diagnosis. Preceded by a self-diagnosis. Followed by a formal diagnosis. It was a long, flawed process in need of updating.” Even though an official diagnosis came later in life for Miller (and many others), he was careful to add in his post that “access to a diagnosis is a privilege many do not enjoy”, and that while his diagnosis was shocking, it was not necessarily unexpected.
Miller, best known for his role on Prison Break, is one of several notable figures that have publicly spoken out about being neuro-divergent, including Elon Musk, who announced that he has Asperger’s Syndrome in May of this year.
Since his diagnosis, Miller has been taking time to “re-evaluate 5 decades of lived experience.”
“This isn’t something I’d change,” says Miller, “immediately being autistic is central to who I am.”
Miller has spent much of the last year quietly educating himself. “I don’t want to run the risk of suddenly being a loud, ill-informed voice in the room,” he wrote. “I don’t wish to do additional harm. Only to raise my hand, say, ‘I am here.”
